Medicare Costs and IRMAA

Medicare Costs and IRMAA, Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount

Costs and Coverage

Navigating Medicare costs and IRMAA requires strategic planning.

Medicare costs include premiums, deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. These can vary based on the parts of Medicare you are enrolled in and your specific plan.

Premiums

Part A: Most people do not pay a premium for Part A if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working a minimum of 10 years.

Part B: The standard monthly premium for Part B varies based on income. Most people will pay $185 in 2025. If your income is high, you could be charged more, this is called IRMAA, Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount. Please contact me to find out what your Part B premium will be.

Part C and Part D: Costs for these plans vary depending on the specific plan and coverage options. You could also pay an IRMAA surcharge for Part D.

Deductibles and Coinsurance

Each part of Medicare has its own deductible and coinsurance requirements. For example, in 2025, Part A deductible for each benefit period is $1,676, and Part B annual deductible is $257. After meeting the deductibles, recipients typically pay a percentage of the costs, or a copay for services.

More Coverage

Medicare Advantage or Part C, Medicare Supplements and Medicare Prescription Drug plans are run by private insurance companies and can help cover some of the costs that Original Medicare does not cover.

IRMAA

What is IRMAA

IRMAA stands for Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount. It is an additional charge that some people pay on top of their Medicare Part B and Part D premiums. The amount of IRMAA you pay is based on your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) as reported on your federal tax return from two years ago. Individuals with higher incomes are subject to these extra charges, which are recalculated annually by the Social Security Administration (SSA).

For those with incomes above a certain threshold, IRMAA can significantly increase the overall cost of Medicare coverage. It is important to be aware of how your income level affects your IRMAA and plan accordingly to avoid any unexpected expenses.
